The Legacy of Nancy Rose

Written by Susan Newhof

The Arts Council of White Lake – Nuveen Center lost a good friend and founder this past summer.

Nancy Rose loved to tell the story of how she and a small group of friends got together to create an organization that would sponsor a series of summer concerts. The natural selection for a name was White Lake Arts Council, but Nancy suggested it should be Arts Council of White Lake so it would always be at the beginning of an alphabetized list, instead of at the end!

A woman and a man, sitting outooders in the sunshine enjoying a glass of wine. A dog leans up against the man.
Nancy and her husband, Ralph.

Nancy directed several of Montague High School’s musicals, and she and her beloved husband Ralph were big supporters of the arts. When we created the Legacy Circle for friends who let us know they named the ACWL Nuveen as a beneficiary in their will or trust, Nancy and Ralph were among the first members.

Nancy was enthusiastic, loving, creative and lots of fun. After an exciting life of teaching English to two generations of Montague school children, raising her own four kids, and traveling with Ralph, Nancy passed away peacefully July 11 at the family cottage on Lake Michigan. She is greatly missed by all of us who knew her.

We are so grateful to Nancy and the rest of that visionary group who came together nearly four decades ago around the idea of bringing live concerts to the White Lake community. It is amazing to see that inspiration grow to include a retail and exhibit gallery, educational arts programming, and community events that serve adults and children of all ages and abilities.
