The Color of Music – Exhibiting “Sound Power”

Experience the confluence of visual art and music while viewing the ACWL-Nuveen’s summer exhibition, Music Op. 1 No. 3 – The Color of Music – June 16 – July 29, 2023. Artists from the Great Lakes region recently responded to an advertised call for our third annual music-themed show which was juried by artist/musician, Katherine Bourdon. Ms. Bourdon thoughtfully reviewed all the entries and had this to say about the experience:

“My artwork is rooted in my experience as a musician. The artwork I am attracted to has “sound power” for me. It could be percussive with repeating pattern, contain beautiful color harmony, or contain line which becomes a single violin melody. There are several artworks in The Color of Music Exhibition that express the harmonious relationship and influence that music has upon artwork. Jump in the River, by James Alexander, is a wonderful synthesis of sound, music, and art. The video footage contains photos and field recordings of sounds of the Kaw River layered with an angular, melodic, musical composition. The actual written score is a delightful synesthetic representation of this multimedia artwork. Dance Like Mick Jagger, by Kelly Witte, is a clever graphic homage to the pop hit song, Moves like Jagger. The Winner Takes It All and Dancing in the Moonlight by Shannon Miller, directly translates each song note by note into an artful vertical graph. There are many more artworks in this exhibit, too numerous to mention, that beautifully explore the symbiotic relationship of art and music.”
