“I enjoy making beautiful things for people to wear. My ideas come from the woods and water where I live. In my work you’ll see waves, trees, stars from the big night sky, and all the mystery they honor.” Jeweler and mixed-media ACWL-Nuveen Artist Member, Suzanne Moynihan, has lived and been inspired by West Michigan for over 50 years.
Suzanne, who was born in Kalamazoo and grew up in Harper Woods, attended Michigan State University where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and her K-12 teaching certificate. After graduating Suzanne started her career as a custom designer, bench jeweler, and art teacher in the public schools. She went on to enrich her metal working knowledge at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine and at Grand Valley State University where she received her Master of Arts. While teaching in the Spring Lake public school system Suzanne maintained her studio practice, raised two boys with her husband, and stayed active in the West Michigan arts community. She has been involved with the ACWL-Nuveen since 1999 when she was a part of the arts council’s original exhibition space – The White River Gallery. Her involvement with White Lake also includes participating in previous ACWL-Nuveen Art in the Barn and Garden Art fundraisers and collaborating with Lynn Cotter and Montague High School writers to produce a book entitled, Reflections of White River – It’s People, Their Stories.
Professing that her artwork is creatively motivated primarily by nature, Suzanne also acknowledges, “the many students I’ve had over the years in public schools and at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, they have probably influenced me the most. Their creativity and curiosity is inspiring.” She also is a big fan of the creatives found on the internet!
Suzanne’s custom frameable cards, jewelry and mixed media art can be found in the ACWL-Nuveen retail gallery and at the Gallery Uptown in Grand Haven – www.galleryuptown.net
