The high winds and snowy conditions on Saturday, March 18 did not deter the approximately 90 people who braved the weather to attend the ACWL-Nuveen’s reception and award presentation for the 2023 adult Juried and Youth Exhibitions. We were pleased that so many friends, family and community members came to view both exhibits and celebrate the artists as they received their awards.
Traverse City-based artist and this year’s juror, Carolyn Swift, https://carolynswift.com/
visited the ACWL-Nuveen on Friday, March 17 to view both of the shows in person and determine the award winners. Her initial decisions for the adult artwork selected for the show was via the artists online digital entries in late February. Viewing the actual artwork installed in both galleries gave Ms. Swift an up-close and personal view of how each of the artisans’ blended their skill with materials, concept, and presentation. She had this to say about the 2023 Juried Exhibition:
“Art is an experience: things observed and imagined; rich qualities of materials chosen by the artist. This exhibit is wide-ranging in media, size, style, and ideas. The artists use their materials skillfully. Equally, through the materials, the artists ingeniously illuminate and intensify connections within themselves, with other people and human-made spaces, and with the natural world.
The biggest challenge was paring down choices so that the pieces could “breathe” within the gallery space. Another challenge was trying to visualize the actual pieces from uniform digital images on my laptop.
It has been an honor to participate in this year's juried exhibit.”
The ACWL-Nuveen congratulates ALL of the artist participants and this year’s award winners:
